Transportation Planning Tool Developer

Job Description

Modern Mobility Partners, a full-service transportation planning and traffic engineering firm founded in January 2018, is looking for a Transportation Planner with an interest in transportation planning across all modes, GIS, smart mobility planning, such as new and emerging technologies, Shiny applications, and R packages.

 

This position will assist our growing firm in the development and preparation of transportation and transit planning tools and studies, reports, and analyses. The candidate will have the opportunity to assist senior transportation planners in the field of transportation and transit planning across all modes, including but not limited to needs analysis, project prioritization and performance measures, funding/grant strategies, emerging technologies and autonomous vehicles readiness planning, etc.  This position will focus on transportation planning tool development, testing, and enhancements.

The individual will have the opportunity to work with a dynamic team to complete a variety of projects. Tasks may include but are not limited to:  

  • Lead the design, development, and maintenance of R-based tools and Shiny web applications that support transportation planning workflows, including project prioritization and fiscal constraint analysis  

  • Collaborate with project managers and planners to define tool requirements, establish development timelines, and manage testing and deployment  

  • Build and maintain R packages and automated data processing pipelines to support repeatable, scalable analytical workflows  

  • Develop interactive web maps and spatial visualizations using Leaflet (R or JavaScript)  

  • Automate GIS analysis and spatial data processing workflows using R and Python  

  • Conduct big data analytics, including data acquisition, processing, cleaning, and management from a variety of transportation and public-sector sources  

  • Develop data visualizations and interactive dashboards — including Power BI and Shiny — that communicate complex planning information to technical and non-technical audiences  

  • Conduct statistical analysis and modeling using data from surveys, travel demand models, and other transportation data sources  

  • Build and maintain Excel-based analytical tools using advanced formulas, Power Query, or VBA  

  • Maintain version control and collaborative development practices using Git and GitHub  

  • Translate complex technical analysis and tool outputs into clear, accessible PowerPoint presentations for clients, stakeholders, and non-technical audiences  

  • Conduct data analysis, including financial forecasts, economic analysis, return on investment, post-processing of travel demand data, and calculating project performance metrics 

  • Support transportation and transit planning projects, including long-range planning, multimodal analyses, corridor studies, and project evaluation, prioritization, and funding strategy, as needed to meet project team demands  

  • Support research efforts, including data collection, literature reviews, and case studies as needed  

 

Required Qualifications 

  • Master’s Degree in City Planning, Public Administration, Engineering, or a related field 

  • 2+ years of professional transportation planning and tool development experience 

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office 

  • Proficiency in R, and R Shiny 

  • Strong communication and writing skills, including a proficiency at communicating concepts to a variety of audiences with limited statistical understanding

Preferred Qualifications

  • AICP or ability to attain within 1 year or PE or ability to attain within 2 years 

  • SQL and database design 

  • Proficiency in Javascript 

  • GIS analysis 

  • 4+ years of professional transportation planning and tool development experience
